Teeth Whitening Choices
Every day, we are asked about teeth whitening. The treatment has become very popular, and in Westchester, most dentist offices offer different kinds.
There are so many choices, it is easy to get confused. The options fall into a few basic categories:
1. Over-the-counter products. Crest WhiteStrips, Rembrandt Whitening tooth- paste, and similar products can be picked up in any drugstore or supermarket. But do they work? Usually not. They may keep your teeth from getting darker, but by themselves, they will not noticeably change their color.
2. Take-home Whitening Trays. The most proven method, and usually the most cost-effective. We make trays that are fitted specifically for you, and you fill them with whitening gel and wear them for about 3 weeks. Very efficient, this method also has the best staying power, lasting the longest. It’s also easy to maintain – because you keep the trays, you can always get more gel if you see your teeth getting darker again. Normally priced at $400-500 at most offices, it’s only $99 at ours.
3. In-office whitening. Britesmile and Zoom are the most popular options. The two companies recently merged, and now offer both choices. Unfortunately, we have not found these treatments to be effective long-term. In our experience, most effects wear off in several months, and you need to repeat the procedure again. Because of this, we do not offer Britesmile or ZOOM in our office.
4. Deep Bleaching. This procedure is really in a class of its own. Extremely effective, very comfortable, and very long lasting, it is the whitening option many of our patients choose. It combines the take- home treatment with two in-office visits, resulting in white, natural, radiant smile. Although much more expensive then the take-home method, the results are remark- able, and very easy to maintain. If you have any questions about the products or techniques we discussed, please call us! We are always happy to hear from you, and will be glad to answer any questions you have.
