Broken Tooth

Broken teeth are a very common emergency in our practice.

Most often, it is a back tooth with a big silver filling, and a portion of it just fractures off.  You may be surprised to know that usually, it is completely painless, and the only discomfort may be due to sharp edges irritating your tongue.

When that happens, please call us right away.   Even though it may not be bothering you, the inside of the tooth is now exposed.  If there is any decay present (and there usually is), it will grow very quickly.  If the tooth is to be saved, immediate action is often required.

The treatment usually consists of replacing the broken part.  A crown is frequently necessary, because most of the tooth is missing.  However, once the crown is placed, the tooth stays healthy for a long time.
