Care Instructions after Periodontal Treatment

  1. If you received an INJECTION, please try to avoid eating on that side until the anesthetic wears off to prevent injury to your mouth.  The injection site may feel sore for several days.  Tylenol or Advil may help with discomfort.
  2. It is very COMMON to have some MILD DISCOMFORT after Root Planing & Scaling Treatments.  Discomfort on CHEWING, & SENSITIVITY TO COLD are normal and should subside in time.  Warm salt water rinses, and use of a fluoride toothpaste & rinse will help this discomfort subside.
  3. If we prescribed antibiotics, please take the full course EVEN IF THE MOUTH  FEELS NORMAL.
  4. Excellent oral hygiene care at home, as well as following through with scaling appointments are ESSENTIAL for the CONTROL of Periodontal Disease. This is a disease that is NOT CURABLE, IT IS ONLY CONTROLABLE! Our goal is to get you to optimal dental health & then MOST IMPORTANTLY to stabilize your condition. This is a team effort. **THE HEALTH OF YOUR MOUTH IS THE GATEWAY TO THE REST OF YOUR BODY AND CONTRIBUTES TO YOUR OVERALL HEALTH.**
  5. Maintenance is an ESSENTIAL part of Root Planing & Scaling Treatment. 3 month follow up appointments are NECESSARY, ESPICALLY the first year after scalings to get to a point of stability. Periodontal Disease DOES NOT happen over night and it does not heal & stabilize over night either.
